Talking About The Weather

(Hablando sobre el clima)

Situation: Ana and Marta talk about the weather while walking to their next class. (Situación: Ana y Marta hablan sobre el clima mientras caminan hacia su próxima clase.)

Ann:      Oh, it feels so cold this morning. (¡Ay, se siente tan frío esta mañana!)

Mary:    It sure is. Early this morning my car’s windshield was covered with frost. I had to spray it with water before I could head to school. (Claro que sí. Temprano esta mañana, el parabrisas de mi auto estaba cubierto de escarcha. Tuve que rociarlo con agua antes de poder ir a la escuela.

Ann:      Who would have thought it could be this cold in early December, especially in California. (¿Quién hubiera pensado que podría hacer tanto frío a principios de diciembre, especialmente en California?

Mary:    I know. The temperature was 35 degrees Fahrenheit when I woke up this morning. I was freezing as soon as I got out of bed. The cold weather just hit me by surprise. (Lo sé. La temperatura estaba a 35 grados Fahrenheit cuando me desperté esta mañana. Me congelé en cuanto salí de la cama. El clima frío me tomó por sorpresa.)

Ann:      I cannot remember when it was this cold in early December. (No recuerdo la última vez que hizo tanto frío a principios de diciembre.)

Mary:   Brace yourself for the rain this afternoon. Cold and wet, Yuck! (Prepárate para la lluvia esta tarde. Frío y mojado, ¡qué asco!)

Ann:      It is going to rain this afternoon? (Ana: ¿Va a llover esta tarde?)

Mary:   Not only this afternoon, but also the rest of the week. (No solo esta tarde, sino también el resto de la semana.)

Ann:      Oh, it is going to be miserable. I have a full class schedule today and tomorrow. To walk from class to class, I will have to juggle my books and my umbrella trying not to get wet. (Oh, será miserable. Tengo un horario de clases completo hoy y mañana. Para caminar de una clase a otra, tendré que hacer equilibrios con mis libros y mi paraguas para no mojarme.)

Mary:    You carry too many books. Why don’t you leave some of them in your locker? (Llevas demasiados libros. ¿Por qué no dejas algunos en tu casillero?)

Ann:      My locker is a long way from my English classes. This is the reason why I carry all my books with me. Is it going to rain hard or just drizzle? (Mi casillero está lejos de mis clases de inglés. Esta es la razón por la que llevo todos mis libros conmigo. ¿Va a llover fuerte o solo lloviznar?)

Mary:    The news said that it would start to drizzle around noon, and then it would rain really hard by three o’clock. (Las noticias dijeron que empezaría a lloviznar alrededor del mediodía, y luego llovería intensamente a las tres en punto.)

Ann:      No hope for better weather this week? (¿No hay esperanza de un mejor clima esta semana?)

Mary:   There is a slim chance of sunshine by Saturday. However, it will be foggy, windy, and rainy before the sun comes out this weekend. (Hay una pequeña posibilidad de sol para el sábado. Sin embargo, estará neblinoso, ventoso y lluvioso antes de que salga el sol este fin de semana.)

Mary:   Yes, I can hardly remember when it rained last time. Well, as long as there is no thunder or lightning, I can bear it. (Sí, apenas recuerdo la última vez que llovió. Bueno, siempre y cuando no haya truenos ni relámpagos, puedo soportarlo.)

Ann:      We rarely have thunder or lightning in California. (Raramente tenemos truenos o relámpagos en California.)

Mary:   We are very lucky that California has one of the best weather conditions in America. When it is hot, it is not humid; when it rains, there is no thunder or lightning, and the cold weather during the winter season is quite mild compared to the weather of the other states. (Somos muy afortunados de que California tenga unas de las mejores condiciones climáticas en América. Cuando hace calor, no es húmedo; cuando llueve, no hay truenos ni relámpagos, y el clima frío durante la temporada de invierno es bastante suave en comparación con el clima de otros estados.)

Ann:      Yes, we are lucky. However, sometimes when I look at the Christmas pictures, I just wish we had some snow. It looks so pretty when everything is covered by a blanket of pure white snow. Ann:      Yes, it would be fun to make a snowman or go skiing. (Sí, sería divertido hacer un muñeco de nieve o ir a esquiar.)

Mary:   We have never seen snow; we have never made a snowman, and we have never gone skiing. We better do something about this. (Nunca hemos visto nieve, nunca hemos hecho un muñeco de nieve y nunca hemos ido a esquiar. Deberíamos hacer algo al respecto.)

Ann:      Maybe we should plan a trip to Aspen, Colorado during winter break. I heard that the skiing season is fantastic up there. (Tal vez deberíamos planear un viaje a Aspen, Colorado, durante las vacaciones de invierno. He escuchado que la temporada de esquí es fantástica allí.)

Mary:    I don’t think we can afford a trip to Aspen. It is very expensive up there. (No creo que podamos permitirnos un viaje a Aspen. Es muy caro allí.)

Ann:      I am just wishing. I know what I will be doing during winter break. I will be working very hard to save money for a new car. (Solo estoy deseando. Sé lo que estaré haciendo durante las vacaciones de invierno. Trabajaré muy duro para ahorrar dinero para un auto nuevo.)

Mary:    With the cars that we drive, it is better that we live in a place where there is no snow. (Con los autos que conducimos, es mejor que vivamos en un lugar donde no nieve.)

Ann:      You are right, we are better off with no snow. Ok, I have a class right now; see you later in the library. (Tienes razón, estamos mejor sin nieve. Bueno, tengo una clase ahora; nos vemos más tarde en la biblioteca.)
